How to Tie the Perfect Cleat Hitch every time.
There are many different opinions in the sailing fraternity on which is the best way to fasten your boat to a cleat when docking. At bottom up boats our preference is the cleat hitch. In the video embedded below we show you three types of cleat hitch. Allowing you to always select the perfect cleat hitch regardless of the length of the cleat or the width of the line you are using.
It may not be possible to always have your rope match the size of the cleat so you need to be able to adapt to ensure your knot is tight and secure, this will avoid an embarrassing and maybe costly moment as your boat sails away for the dock without you.
If your rope and cleat size match the 1/2 loop cleat hitch will do the job, if you are expecting some bad weather or leaving your boat for an extended period of time it is advisable to upgrade to the full loop cleat hitch which will provide you with additional holding power.
The third type of cleat hitch is the multi loop cleat hitch, this version is recommended when the line you are using is too small for the cleat you are using. Adding multiple loops around the base of the cleat before completing the hitch creates additional friction which stops the line from slipping under load. This version of the cleat hitch has as one small disadvantage, the loops can get locked making it harder to undo. It is not a massive issue, in most case a sharp pull will free up the line if it has locked on itself.
The table below shows how to match your line width to the cleat length, when matched the half loop cleat hitch will hold firm in all but the roughest condition.
If you made it to the end of the video you now have the skills to tie a perfect cleat hitch every time, this simple but important skill ensures you can dock your boat with the peace of mind that it will be there when your return !!!!
